And now the former actress is engaged to the fifth in line to the throne, public interest in Meghan’s mother, father and two half-siblings has reached fever-pitch.
Her half-sister, Samantha Grant, may attract more press attention thanks to her outspoken comments about Megan – like that time she called her a ‘shallow social climber’ – but the Suits star also has a half-brother called Thomas Markle Junior.
Both Samantha and Thomas are her siblings from her father’s side, following his marriage to Roslyn Markle.
Thomas is a 50-year-old father of two who lives in Grants Pass, Oregon, working as a window fitter.
Much like the rest of his family – including his sister and his father, Thomas Markle, he has been declared bankrupt in the past.
Two months after Meghan and Harry’s relationship was made public last year, Thomas Jr. was arrested in January 2017 for allegedly holding a gun to his girlfriend Darlene Blount’s head during a drunken argument.
Charged with unlawful use of a dangerous weapon and menacing domestic violence, he faced jailed for up to five years if convicted.
However, the charges were later dismissed and he apologised for his actions, also admitting he was seeking help for his drinking problems.
Thomas has also been divorced twice, once with Tracy Dooley, who he split with in 2001, and then with Johannes Rawha, who he divorced in 2009.
He had two sons with Dooley, Tyler and Thomas Markle III.
Whether they will be calling Harry and Meghan ‘uncle and aunty’ anytime soon remains to be seen, however, as it is understood Thomas Markle Jr. doesn’t have any contact with his now globally-famous half-sister.
But that hasn’t stopped him giving press photographs of Meghan growing up, as well as answering questions in interviews about Prince Harry’s leading lady.
He also managed to cause quite a stir when he claimed Harry had met his and Meghan’s father Thomas.
But Samantha angrily dismissed this claim, tweeting at the time: ‘My father hates Tom Jr. And will not talk with him. The articles are B.S. My dad has NOT met Harry.’
Meghan Markle’s half sister Samantha Grant first hit headlines in November 2016 when she described Prince Harry‘s future wife as a ‘shallow social climber’.
She also claimed that the truth about how Meghan allegedly treated her family would ‘destroy’ her relationship with Prince Harry.
Since then, she has earned herself column inches by documenting Meghan’s romance with Harry, also later backtracking on some of her alleged comments in the press.
Samantha Grant – also known as Samantha Markle – is Meghan’s half sister from her father Tom Markle’s first marriage to Roslyn Markle.
Born in 1965, she is 17 years Meghan’s senior at 52.
Twice-divorced, she has three children – Ashleigh, Christopher and Noelle.
Like her father, she filed for bankruptcy and is estranged from her mother and brother Thomas Jr.
A one-time actress and model, Samantha describes herself as a writer, a mental health counsellor and a ‘blabbermouth’.
In fact, she is planning an autobiography called The Diary of Princess Pushy’s Sister – although she insists this will not be a ‘slamming’ account of growing up with Meghan.
Samantha has also previously claimed she is set to star in a reality show.
She also sells jewellery in Florida to raise money to fund the feature films she writes.
Samantha was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2008 and now uses a wheelchair.
She was reported as saying that Meghan had not spoken to her since she was diagnosed with MS nine years ago: ‘I didn’t feel a separation from her until I was in the wheelchair.’
But she later denied making these comments.
She is also the most prolific critic of Meghan in her extended family.
As well as describing her as a ‘shallow social climber’, she maintains Meghan forgot all about her family when she made it in Hollywood.
She is also reported to have said that Meghan had always fancied Harry as she had a ‘soft spot for gingers’ and was ‘ambitious’ to become a Princess.
‘The royal family would be appalled by what she’s done to her own family. The truth would kill her relationship with Prince Harry,’ Samantha previously said of the future wife of the fifth in line to the throne.
She also claimed she raised Meghan for 12 years while she was growing up in California. However, Samantha’s ex-husband Scott Rasmussen has come out denying this.
And while she has described Markle as ‘very beautiful and conservative, very real, very giving’, she has also taken to Twitter to publicly attack Meghan for her lifestyle website called The Tig.
‘There is so much more to focus on in the world than shoes and handbags,’ she wrote.
When Markle later wrote an article for Time magazine on period poverty across the world for International Women’s Day, Samantha seethed: ‘But what did she donate to them to make real change come about? Money for toilets, maxi pads, or just a photo op?’
After the rumours of Meghan and Harry’s engagement ramped up earlier this month, Samantha appeared to backtrack, insisting there was no rift between her and Meghan and describing the Suits star as ‘absolutely lovely’, ‘very strong and very graceful’ and ‘very lively’.
And during an appearance on Good Morning Britain today – just one day after Meghan’s engagement to Harry was confirmed – she spoke fondly of Meghan, congratulating her and telling her she loved her.
‘I can see she’s just bubbling,’ Samantha said. ‘It’s so charming and so warm. When I watch her with him it’s very real and normal. We only get that once in a lifetime if we’re lucky. It’s not about royalty so much as it is about love and that’s wonderful for them.
‘I just want to say I love you, I’m incredibly happy for you. Cheers and to a wonderful life. If I had a glass of champagne I would toast, but it’s three in the morning and we don’t drink at three in the morning!’
Naturally, Meghan and Harry’s spring 2018 wedding guest list is top secret right now.
It’s unlikely either Samantha or Thomas Jr. will bag an invite, however, given what they are both reported to have said about Meghan.
