West Coast offers Naitanui three years

West Coast have offered star ruckman and free agent Nic Naitanui a three-year contract on a significantly reduced salary.

The Eagles have been in talks about re-contracting the spectacular ruckman, who is set to return soon from a knee reconstruction that ended his 2018 season and saw him miss the club's premiership.

Naitanui, a unique package of athletic ruckwork and marketability, has been recovering from a second knee reconstruction after making a return during 2018, with West Coast expecting him to resume shortly after their bye.

Talks between Naitanui's management and the Eagles have been underway for several weeks, with the Eagles clearly keen to secure him for the future, but also hoping to recruit him on a heavily discounted deal in his free agency year.

Naitanui is a restricted free agent this year, which means West Coast can match any other offer if he chooses to exercise his rights as a free agent, and Naitanui would have to be traded if he wanted to leave, which seems unlikely given the relationship between club and player.

Naitanui has been one of the highest-paid players in the competition – including his marketing deals – having been contracted for between $900,000 and $1 million in 2017, when his first knee reconstruction saw him miss the entire season.

Naitanui, who has been in full training for some weeks, is scheduled to return to playing after the bye. The ruckman's line coach Matt Rosa told Triple M this week that Naitanui should be ready after this weekend's bye.
