Members of the public have been warned not to approach a convicted murderer who is on the run.

William Kerr, also known as Billy, escaped from HMP Hollesley Bay prison in Suffolk on Friday afternoon.

The 56-year-old, who is described as dangerous and is serving a life sentence for murder, did not return to a meeting point after a few hours’ release.

Kerr was jailed for life in 1998 for strangling Maureen Comfort to death in Leeds.

He has a tattoo on his right hand that says ‘Les’, as well as other tattoos on his left arm, right arm and left wrist.

Kerr also has ‘bad teeth’ and speaks with a Scottish accent, police said.

He is described as white, five foot seven inches tall, with blue eyes, black hair, is of a thin build and is about 10 stone.

He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a blue ‘North Face’ puffer jacket with an orange logo.

Anyone who believes they may have seen Kerr, or who has any information about him, should contact Suffolk Police on 101 quoting reference number 330 of Friday December 1.

Hollesley Bay is a Category D open prison and Young Offenders’ Institute that is among the largest in the UK.
