Jamie Carragher loves getting one over his old Manchester United rivals – but the Liverpool legend is the one on the losing side of Joe Gomez’s very honest admission.
The current Liverpool defender was asked who he looked up to in the Premier League when he was a youngster and who he wants to emulate.
The youngster’s first thought was to go to his Liverpool predecessor Carragher, an icon of Anfield.
However, Gomez had to admit it was actually Rio Ferdinand, who played for Liverpool’s bitter rivals Manchester United, who he preferred.
‘For me, coming to Liverpool I knew how big Jamie Carragher was, how crucial he was over the years and the number of appearances he made and so on,’ he toldThe Sports Review. ‘But in terms of playing style it would probably be Rio Ferdinand in the way that he played.
‘How he was a ball-playing centre-half and so on. I looked up to him for that aspect.’

Gomez’s comments are sure to give Gary Neville some fresh ammo when it comes to his banter with Carragher.
But when it comes to Liverpool fans, they would simply be happy to see Gomez replicate any defender if it helps Jurgen Klopp’s side from conceding so many goals.
