A policeman stopped an overturned lorry and its trapped driver from falling off a bridge by clinging onto its wheel for 15 minutes.

PC Martin Willis held on for dear life after the vehicle crashed on the A1 near Aberford, North Yorkshire.

He was the first on the scene of the accident yesterday morning, which left the lorry and its driver perilously close to toppling over the edge.

He said: ‘After holding on to the vehicle to stop it swaying in the wind I can’t begin to describe my relief when West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue arrived on the scene.’

PC Willis, whose regular job is patrolling the M62 in West Yorkshire, said the 15 minutes felt like a lot longer.

He added: ‘There was a fair bit of snow and ice on the carriageway.’

The lorry driver was eventually rescued from the wreckage and was taken to hospital, where he is recovering from serious but not life-threatening injuries.

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: ‘Emergency services worked incredibly hard together this morning to rescue the driver of this vehicle on the A1.

‘The male casualty is recovering in hospital after what must have been a terrifying ordeal. We wish him well.’
